Jonette Williams grew up in Brooklyn, cooking the South Carolina regional Gullah Geechee cuisine with her mother and grandmother.

With “mommy” and “nana,” Williams spent hours in the kitchen area perfecting Gullah Geechee staples these as red rice, gradual-cooked spiced legumes, stewed meats, poultry, greens, tomatoes and okra. Her mother’s individual specialty was red rice, she stated.

A daughter’s assure

Cooking was so central to the family’s existence that when Williams’ mother, Hurtha Robinson, was dying of liver cancer in 2016, Williams created her a promise: One working day, she would open a meals truck in her mother’s honor.

“She failed to search at me and say nearly anything else except for ‘When?’ And I explained to her I did not know, but shortly,” said Williams, who moved to Columbus in 2001.

“Following she passed away, I wanted to honor her.”

Williams’ mother even gave her daughter’s food a identify: Jonette’s Du Jour Glorieux Delicacies. Glorieux, the French term for glorious, stood out. 

“It was something that she felt about my foodstuff,” she mentioned.

With the title as her basis, Williams, 41, launched Glorieux (pronounced glory-yoo) WaFulz, a gourmand waffle pop-up that has appeared at Antiques on Significant the last a few Saturdays, in addition to Seventh Son Brewing.
